Welcome Emiliano Martinez!

Welcome to Emiliano Martinez!

Emiliano Martinez has finally been announced as Villa’s third signing of the summer transfer window, with the fourth and fifth close to being done. A £17 million pound deal was struck with Arsenal for his signature. Martinez brings with him a hunger to play first team football, leaving Arsenal and taking the plunge to come to the Midlands to fight for a first team spot for the Villans. The Argentine shot-stopper got his chance in the Gunners Starting XI during the end of last season following an injury to Leno making a huge impression with some colossus performances which saw Arsenal lift the FA Cup. Martinez has left Arsenal on fantastic terms with Arsenal fans wishing him the best of luck at Aston Villa. David Seaman has admitted on TalkSPORT that he is incredibly annoyed by the departure calling Martinez a ‘great goalkeeper’ which is extremely high praise from the ex-Arsenal legend. The 28-year-old has joined Dean Smith’s side to be #1 with Tom Heaton still on the side lines with a long term injury and no clear return date yet set. This does call into question others positions in the squad. With Villa now having Martinez, Heaton, Steer, Nyland and Kalinic on the books, its clear that two or three will need to be moved on. Martinez and Heaton competing for the goalkeeper position once Heaton returns will be fantastic for us. With two top class goalkeeping options to choose from, competitions for places will be very healthy. This is another very astute signing. 28 years old as a goalkeeper is still young and there is a potential to have Martinez as our #1 for many years to come. This also announces a statement of intent from the club and silences those who said we would be unable to attract ‘top talent’ to Aston Villa with Dean Smith as the manager. Martinez was set to battle with Leno to be first choice in a very good Arsenal squad which is getting better by the day under Mikel Arteta and could be on their way back to where they feel they belong.

Emi Martinez's Premier League Statistics: Appearances: 15 Clean Sheets: 6 Wins: 8 Losses: 6 Conceded: 16 Errors lead to Goals: 0 Own Goals: 0 *taken from Premier Leagues official website. He has proven himself whenever given the opportunity and I feel he is going to be a fantastic piece of business for Aston Villa. WELCOME EMI MARTINEZ! UP THE VILLA!
